It has been five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes since I’ve started my quest for a healthier life style. It has been a long and at times challenging journey that will continue for the rest of my life. Originally, as the marker for this occasion, I was going to run a half marathon and sadly I was not able to complete this goal (I’m hopeful I will complete this next year). However, I was able to celebrate in another way; by attending the Institute of Integrated Nutrition’s Fall IIN to Action Conference.
The Fall IIN to Action Conference was an amazing, invigorating two-day event that brought together student and alumni from all over the world to listen. Together we listened, learned and were inspired by some of today’s leading experts in nutrition.
After an introduction and some interactive sessions led by Founder and Director Joshua Rosenthal, Pierre Dukan, author of “The Dukan Diet” which Kate & Carol Middelton both followed before the royal wedding, was our first speaker. Sally Fallon Morell, President of the Weston Price Foundation, followed addressing the flaws with the USDA ‘s guidelines as well as the “real food” movement. The first day concluded with a talk from Dr. Joel Fuhrman on nutrition based disease prevention and reversal as seen in Joe Cross’s film “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead” (Dr Fuhrman was Mr. Cross’s doctor)
Sunday Morning’s conference kicked off with an amazing talk from Dr. David Katz. Dr. Katz has started some incredible programs such as “ABC for Fitness” which encourages Activity Bursts in the Classroom by building curriculum that gets children active. He was followed by Dr. Mark Hyman who addressed the problem of “Diabesity” a combination of Obesity and Diabetes. He is a member of the Institute for Functional medicine and has a new book coming out on Tuesday called “The Blood Sugar Solution”. Finishing up the morning session was world leader in the field of mind and body medicine, Dr. Deepak Chopra who spoke about leadership and entrepreneurship.
In between all the speakers, we had fitness break provided by Celebrity Trainer Joel Harper, Yogi Dana Flynn of Laughing Lotus Yoga, and crosscultural fitness star Sarina Jain who led the group in her Masala Bhangra workout. (Balle Balle!)
It was a weekend that not only provided a great deal of information. More importantly it was a weekend that allowed those of us involved in the program to meet, be inspired, and feel supported by one another. Because the program is on-line, it was a unique opportunity for us to meet in person and connect. I’m so excited to be part of this incredible community of men and women and to hopefully influence change in the way we all eat and live.
