A Bouquet of Freshly Sharpened Pencils

“Don’t you love New York in the fall? It makes me wanna buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address.” – Tom Hanks as Joe Fox in You’ve Got Mail

Yesterday I went to Wal-Mart (Yes, I know, another wild Monday!) Anyway, when I walked in I was taken by surprise. Wal-Mart has declared Back to School Season! It is August!!

Regardless of my feelings about the gigantic ramp-up times retailers are adding on to holidays and seasons (you have no idea how disturbed I am when Valentine’s candy is available right after Christmas), I was really excited about the school supply displays! I don’t know why, but I love new school supplies. I use to love it back when I was a kid too. You picked out the notebooks, binders, trapper keeper (remember those? they still make them), folders, and pens that were going to make your school year the best ever! Walking through the aisles, I listened to a little girl and her mom discuss if she should get Lisa Frank folder with the big rainbow-colored heart, or the Tinkerbell folder that went with the pencils she had just picked out. I could see the stress on the little girl’s face; it was a decision she had to live with the whole school year! I remembered that feeling too.

Of course, my mom would always try to buy stuff before school started to get the best deals. Some years, I wouldn’t know what I needed till my first day of school. Those years, it was guaranteed that after school, the local Genovese store would be inundated with me and my class mates trying to get our lists completed.

I couldn’t help but be inspired to pick out a few of my own school supplies. I am starting school in a few weeks after all (as you may have read about yesterday). Since I am trying to curb my spending, I picked up a new notebook and some colored pencils (for another project but they were on sale). I did buy a treat for my niece and nephew, some new pencils with Disney Princesses and Mario Kart Characters. Everyone should have something new for the new school year, even if it is just pencils.

  1. Schools around here are starting in the next week or two…hard to believe, isn’t it? I always like buying new school supplies too. Fortunately for us, the schools in our area have already let the parents know what their kids need…sometimes we have a hard time figuring out what it is, but we do our best. Enjoy the fresh start with a new school year!
