Last night I received my copy of The Dressmaker of Khair Khana by Gayle Tzemach Lemmon. It is the true story of an Afghani woman’s determination to keep her family a float, as she acts as the sole breadwinner under the Taliban rule of war-torn Kabul. It was written by former ABC journalist, Gayle Tzemach Lemmon. I am looking forward to reading it this weekend.
I got this book through Bookperk. Bookperk is a website run through HarperCollins where they sell books with special offers. With my copy of The Dressmaker of Khair Khana, Bookperk made a donation to Mercy Corps which is an organization that “helps people turn crisis in to opportunities”. They are the embody the concept of ‘Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime’ I found out about Bookperk through Ms.Suzao’s Blog. If you check out her blog, you can find out about what “perk” she received. Check out Bookperk to see what perk you can get!
I’m hoping this book, is as good as Kabul Beauty School by Deborah Rodriguez. It is another non-fiction book about empowering women in Kabul. It is actually in development to become a movie. I’m interested in seeing how that progresses. In addition, if you have not read Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner or his follow-up novel, 10,000 Splendid Suns, they are both MUST READS. He is an amazing story teller and both these stories are incredibly moving.
In the mean time, I will start on The Dressmaker of Khair Khana and give a review when I am done.
